Welcome to Mathews Computer Lab

I want to welcome you to our lab. I can't wait to meet everyone and start our year off together. I will post often to let you know what we are doing in the lab. There may be a time span where I don't post weekly due to maternity leave, but will still try to check in. This blog will also be something you use daily to get to certain websites. If you have any questions please let me know.

The first week of school we will be covering the basic rules of the lab... my expectations of each student. We will also go over some online safety rules and how to stay safe on our computers. The second week we will review the rules, establish our routine and spend this last week on online safety rules and activities.

This is going to be a great year. I wish everyone the best for 2012-2013.

Kindergarten will be reading fiction and nonfiction stories on Starfall.com.

First through Fourth grade will be taking the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory.) If they finish before class is over they will practice keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat or Type to Learn.

Kindergarten will start out class on Starfall doing, "I'm Reading." They will be reading about three little plays. They will then continue with the lesson from last week on Penny Panda sticker store.

First grade will start out the class practicing keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat. They will then continue with the lesson from last week on Penny Panda sticker store.

Second-Fourth grade will finish up their presentations this week. Third and Fourth grade will present their Prezi's to the class.

Next week First-Fourth grade will be doing SRI - Scholastic Reading Inventory.

Kindergarten will start out doing Starfall. They will be learning about tongue twisters and riddles. They will then do a word hunt. When finished we will move on to Micrograms - Penny Panda's Sticker Store where they will be introduced to money.

First grade will start out practicing keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat.  They will then move on to Micrograms - Penny Panda's Sticker Store.

Second-Fourth grade will be finishing up their research projects and prepare to present next week.

Kindergarten will start out doing Starfall and then do literacy and math activities on Woodlands.

Kindergarten will start out doing Starfall and then playing some Language Arts games in GameGoo.

First grade will start out practicing keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat and then playing some Language Arts games in GameGoo.

Second/Third and Fourth Grade will start out practicing keyboarding skills and then they will continue working on their research projects.

In Computer Lab...

Kindergarten will be doing Starfall and then BBC Science.

First grade will be doing BBC Dance Mat for keyboarding skills and then BBC Science.

Second Grade will be doing Acuity testing in Math.

Third and Fourth grade will do Type to Learn for keyboarding skills and then continue working on their animal research project.

Kindergarten will begin class on Starfall. They will be going to the section "It's Fun to Read." They will be doing the activity, "All About Me." They will then go to Scholastic to do activities under games.

1st grade will begin the class practicing typing skills on BBC Dance Mat and then they too will go to Scholastic to do activities under games.

2nd/3rd and 4th grade will start out the first 15 minutes practicing keyboarding skills. They will then continue with their research project.

This week in Computer Lab...

Kindergarten will be focusing on Y as long E, Y as a vowel and reviewing more vowels. They will then focus on Language Arts activities on Game Classroom.

First grade will start out class by practicing keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat they will then focus on Language Arts activities on Game Classroom.

Second/Third and Fourth grade are all working on a research project the next 3-4 weeks. They will research on a specific animal using World Book Online and other search engines such as "Kid Rex." They will then type up their research in Microsoft Office. Second grade will go on to make a poster as the 3rd and 4th grade classes make a Prezi for a presentation.

This week in Computer Lab...

Kindergarten will be focusing on the "er,", "ir," and "ur" chunks in Starfall. They will then play some math games on Game Classroom.

First grade will begin class with BBC Dance Mat and then they too will go to Game Classroom to play math games.

Second grade will begin class with BBC Dance Mat. They will then begin a research project on an animal of their choosing. We will use Sweet Search, World Book Online and Brain Pop Jr. to do research. We will then use Microsoft Office to type out a short report and then type up a presentation in PowerPoint to present to the class.

Third grade will begin class with Type to Learn. They will then finish up their PowerPoint projects on their Famous American.

Fourth grade will begin class with Type to Learn. They will then begin a research project on an animal of their choosing. We will use Sweet Search, World Book Online and Brain Pop to do research. We are halfway through the week and just realized I haven't updated our blog this week.

Kindergarten has been reviewing the "ar" and "or" chunk in Starfall. We then reviewed World Book Online and PBS Kids Lab.

In First grade students have been practicing their keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat and then given some free time on our Portaportal.

In Second grade students practiced keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat and then finished up their PowerPoint presentations on their continent.

Third grade students started out with Type to Learn and then started a PowerPoint presentation on their Famous American.

Fourth grade students have been practicing their keyboarding skills in Type to Learn and then given free time on our Portaportal.

This week in Computer Lab...

Kindergarten will start out the class on Starfall. The focus will be the story "Soap Boat," "make-a-word," "long vowel review," and a video "Two Vowels Going for a Walk." Students will then be going to World Book Online to explore the "Early World of Learning." They can do activities from "Trek's Travels,' "Welcome to Reading," or "Know It."

First grade will start out the class practicing their keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat. They will then go to World Book Online to explore the "Early World of Learning." They can do activities from "Trek's Travels,' "Welcome to Reading," or "Know It."

Second grade will start out the class practicing their keyboarding skills on BBC Dance Mat. They will then finish up their PowerPoint projects they started a few weeks ago on one of the seven continents.

 

Third grade and Fourth grade will continue taking the Acuity. This week they will be tested on math.

This week in computer lab...

Kindergarten will start out doing Starfall. The focus will be the story "Dune Buggy," "long U," "long vowel review," and a video on the lonely vowel. They will then get on PBS Kids Lab and play some math games.

First Grade will start out their class with BBC Dance Mat to practice keyboarding skills. They too will then go to PBS Kids Lab.

Second Grade will continue with Acuity testing. They will be taking the Math portion this week.

Third and Fourth Grade will begin the Acuity testing this week. They will do Lang. Arts this week and Math next week.

This week in computer lab...

Kindergarten will be using Starfall to review long o, watch a video on chunking and reading a story called "Robot & Mr. Mole." They will then focus on counting and numbers playing games in Gamequarium.

First grade will practicing keyboarding with "Ready, Set, Type." They will then continue with Reading Builder Practice in Riverdeep.

Second grade will be taking the Acuity again this week and next. This week the focus is Language Arts.

Third and Fourth grade will practice keyboarding skills and then finish up their excel spreadsheet from last week. When finished they will be able to do learning activities in Gamequarium.

Check out PBS KIDS Lab. This is a new addition to the PBS Kids site which offers more than 50 games designed to help children ages 2-8 develop their math skills.

This week in Computer Lab

Kindergarten will be starting the class off doing Starfall. The focus this week will be on "ch," “long i,” and short vowel review and the story "Sky Ride." Students will then practice and review counting playing "Junior 123" activities on Gamequarium.

First grade will be taking the SRI for the first timet his year. They will be taking a test on Scholastic Reading Inventory to find our their Lexile level in reading.

Second grade will continue on their Geography Project using Microsoft Office PowerPoint.

Third and Fourth grade will continue to review and then demonstrate using Excel. Their excel spreadsheet will demonstrate the cost of model rocket parts.
